The United Religions Initiative Great Lakes (URI-GL) is an interfaith non –governmental grassroots interfaith network organization registered and operating in Uganda and harnessing URI global related work in the Great Lakes countries. It that cultivates peace and justice by engaging people to bridge religious differences and work together for the good of their communities and the society.
It is an affiliate of the world wide United Religions Initiative (URI) which is a global inter faith organization with its hub office in San Francisco, California in the United States of America. URI-GL implements its mission through grassroots efforts of its membership groups and organizations, called Cooperatives Circles (CC). It engages in community action such as conflict resolution and reconciliation, environmental sustainability, education, women and youth programs, advocacy for human rights and many others. The organization works with people from the different religious backgrounds, spiritual expressions and indigenous traditions. The Diversities in religion include Muslims, Catholics, Bahai, Hindus, Anglicans, Jews, Brahma kumaris, Hare Krishna, Orthodox, Sikhs, and the Budhists.
The Purpose of the United Religions Initiative is to promote enduring daily interfaith cooperation to end religiously motivated violence to create cultures of peace, justice and healing for the earth and all living beings.
